Meta fined $101M in Ireland after failing to encrypt user passwords
Ireland's Data Protection Commission on Friday fined Meta more than $100 million for privacy law violations related to failing to properly encrypt and store passwords of the tech giant's users.
Ireland fines Meta €91M over plaintext user passwords
In September 2022, the company received a €405 million penalty after regulators determined that Instagram had failed to protect children’s privacy adequately. A few months later, the DPC fined Meta another €265 million over weak security settings that allowed hackers to download a large quantity of user data.

An Irish regulator helping to police European Union data privacy said Friday it had fined Facebook-owner Meta 91 million euros ($102 million) for password-security breaches.The Data Protection Commission criticised Meta for failing to put in place appropriate security measures to protect users' password data and for taking too long to alert the regulator over the issue.
