The murder of a 19-year-old female student in an exclusive neighbourhood of Paris is fuelling new calls from the French right for tougher action on immigration. The body of the young woman, named only as Philippine, was found on Saturday, half-buried in the Bois de Boulogne park on the western edge of the capital.

The suspect, who had committed rape in France in 2019, was due to be deported to his country of origin. But Moroccan authorities failed to deliver the necessary travel documents in time.

The arrested man, whose identity has not been publicly released by authorities due to the sensitivity of the case, has a troubling past

The 22-year-old Moroccan national had already been convicted of rape. He was under an obligation to leave the French territory which had not been enforced due to the lack of consular travel documents issued by Morocco.
