A tornado watch has been issued for Hampton Roads and North Carolina as Hurricane Helene, now downgraded to a tropical storm, makes its way across the southern United States. Tornadoes and damaging wind gusts are possible until 6 p.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Friday morning for parts of North Carolinia, South Carolina and Virginia.  The Virginia portion of the watch does not include the Richmond area. It extends along the North Carolina state line from Hampton Roads,

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch for portions of Virginia including central and southside Virginia.
