When Princess Diana ascended the iconic steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in December 1996 for what would be her sole Met Gala appearance, she turned heads in a slinky navy blue column dress designed by John Galliano for Dior, complete with lingerie-like black lace straps and trim.

The designer approved, noting that "the dress was much more sensuous" because of Diana's change.

The designer—who currently serves as creative director of Maison Margiela—had just taken over at Dior, and since the '96 Met Gala was themed to celebrate an exhibition about Christian Dior, it seemed only natural for Princess Diana to wear a dress by the French fashion house.
